Coming with an almost mystic and fantastical energy, Aza Brown’s acoustic driven melodic art rock piece ‘Afterthought’ is a lesson in minimalist psychedelia. The radiohead esque vocal perfomance is only matched by the equally dark lyricism that on first glance hears like self pity before entirely descending into the depths of dreary darkness. It’s a song about revenge, and not in a cute way whatsoever. There’s a brooding energy that slowly delves into something far more despondent and almost harrowing. It manages to balance and juxtapose a deep sadness with a worryingly cheerful upbeat tonality.
‘Increasingly, I fantasized about your misery and now you wallow in obscurity until we all forgot your name’ might be one of the most unexpectedly troubling and deranged lyrics to hit your ears given the otherwise spritely melody and arrangement of the song.
