In many ways, First Frontier’s latest tune ‘Jagged Line’ sounds inherently jagged and worn out. The slightly washed over guitar work, the rough around the edges production, and the raw style and lyricism make for a piece of pure play rock and roll to kick in the new year. The tune itself delves into the cyclical nature of substance abuse and the almost eternal and never ending quality that time begins to devolve into as you sink further and further into this awful hole. Threading that impossibly difficult needle between hedonism and self control is never easy, and First Frontier bring out that struggle vividly through a rawness. It perfectly captures that search for cheap thrills even when you know you’re the last one at the bar.
The Birmingham based rock duo are loaded with swagger and style. Their brand of rough and gritty garage rock has a passion to it both musically and substantively. The riff slowly meters out at the start before returning alongside a crashing drum pattern that altogether twists and turns to create an intermeshed and frenetic energy that vividly captures the song’s theme.
