The latest two part single from Gavin and the Piano is an interesting exercise in contrast. Juxtaposing two spaces with wildly different aesthetics, feelings, and cultures, Gavin and the Piano explores the wildly distinct lives of California and upstate New York. Shifting sonically to represent the ethos of each location, ‘Live In California/Up North’ goes from summery and upbeat shimmering pop music to a more mellow, almost melancholic piano driven ballad. On ‘Up North’, you can feel the natural beauty, the more restrained appreciation, the more peaceful and at ease life. The utilisation of a harmonica alongside the guitar and piano just adds to the emotional weight of this poignant closing piece.
An interesting two piece release that’s got a unique purpose, and an even more accurate end result.
