Meadow Argus’s EP “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” is a genre-defying and boundary-pushing journey through a world of imagination and creative exploration. Written and recorded in 2021 as part of Jevan Cole’s (Meadow Argus) music studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast, the songs on this EP address the very personal issues that we were all forced to face during the pandemic. With a sound inspired by a blend of Neu!, Kraftwerk, Eurythmics, Broadcast, The Church, Sonic Youth, and Johnny Cash, the seven tracks have been masterfully composed, recorded, mixed, and produced within Jevan’s home studio, a converted earthy shed surrounded by the beauty of nature. The mastering was completed by Jevan Cole and Seamus Kirkpatrick.
Journeying through “Dancing Through A Slow Apocalypse” guides listeners through a soundscape that’s simultaneously confounding yet also enlightening. You almost feel like you’re being transported into some other dimension, a whole other world to sink yourself in and immerse your existence within. It’s so vivid and picturesque through just sonic qualities alone, a remarkably evocative exploration of sound that lends the listener to almost open up their visual imagination alongside the meandering nature of each arrangement. From the opening escapist tropical journey that ‘Is That You?’ puts you through to the more dystopian and futuristic ‘No Company’, it constantly finds space to innovate for you.
The EP features a lush soundscape of dynamic synths, intricate acoustic guitar work, and electric guitar tones that transport you to a dreamy and otherworldly space. The lyrics are thought-provoking and esoteric, fixating your attention deeper and deeper with each passing moment. There’s not a single sound or space I can attach to Dancing Through a Slow Apocalypse, it simply defies categorisation in every which sense of the term. A wildly wonderful fantasy to fascinate yourself within.
