Mia Mormino’s long since used music as an outlet, not just to evoke her inner thoughts and realise her feelings into something tangible and emotive, but also primarily and wholly to create entirely alternate realities to escape into. What some view as disassociation, Mormino sees as storytelling. She has constantly used music as a way to express herself through alternate identifies and in different places, all the while retaining this core expression of maintaining herself as a self proclaimed ‘bad b*tch’. On ‘Alternate Reality’, this mode of disassociation is thoroughly explored, but not in some introspective or sombre way whatsoever. It’s jubilant, loaded with pomp, and completely empowering. It’s incredibly self aware, but it does so with a slight tongue in cheek humour and a celebratory feeling all throughout.
The chorus is ridiculously catchy, with each intonation and drop of a lyric having you swept in and singing alongside. A wonderful piece of commercial pop that stays true to its tone and enthusiasm. Mormino knows how to have fun, whether that’s true her own life or an alternate one is irrelevant. ‘Alternate Reality’ is a great way to just feel great about life even when things aren’t looking great.
