Lavish and luscious, Madebit’s electronic pop tour de force on “An Alien Among Us” is experimental, inventive, and expressive throughout. Madebit’s clearly a musician who thrives in executing her own vision. She revels in the madness of her own creativity, the uniqueness that’s embedded within her as a statement of her own personal expression. The record itself resembles and exemplifies that belief, that there’s something radical about being an outsider but that doesn’t prevent you from being able to connect with the masses. It’s in the fearlessness of expression of artists who were outcast that people really find themselves connecting and engaging with art at a more visceral level. That fascination sparked something in Madebit and led her to craft a record that’s so distinctly her own.
From the onset of “Space” and the titular track alone, the vastness of An Alien Among Us becomes immediately clear. The arrangements and compositions are rich, filled with detail and wholly containing multitudes of sonic oddities that give it that edge and spark. The jolt of tension on a song like “An Ode To Those Who Lead But Do Not Follow” is driving, pulsating, and invigorating. The wacky robotic croonings that open “Persimmon Spritz” even further the imaginative compositional qualities that Madebit comes with. Her vocals somehow find a home in each of these tracks, despite how sonically diverse the record is with its production approaches. It’s her delivery that’s matched to complement each palette. The breakdown on “Persimmon Spirtz” is a personal favourite for me, just an unfettered scattering of synths and a cascading vocal harmony that stitches it all together.
Fearlessly expressive, Madebit brings to life this garden of electronic melodies that constantly drive and bring to life more and more melodies for you to unravel. It’s so wonderfully pieced together, with each track offering something different from the previous one. A wildly diverse journey that keeps you on your toes throughout.
