Draped in a veneer of inevitability and melancholy, Crux’s crying chords on “Empty Home” weave together an image of entropy and decay that all of us can relate to. Written during the lockdown, the song depicts the feelings of utter isolation and social deprivation that the pandemic brought down on all of us. There’s this air of loneliness that’s echoed in his performance, one that starts to translate and elevate itself into a feeling of angst and rage that’s bellowed by the crashing guitars towards the second home. As he sings that titular line with a roaring verve, an aching exasperation, you can feel the weight of that same loneliness wash over you.
It leaves you feeling lost and yearning for some sort of release, whether that be one that’s refreshingly cathartic or aggressively unhealthy isn’t clear. A powerful piece of indie rock.
