Trouble is College Elite’s most introspective and evocative piece. The track recounts an experience singer Joshua William when meeting and conversing with someone from his part while on a car journey. The tune recounts that journey, with a sincerity and rawness that uncovers a deeply personal story to make it something relatable and wistful for any listener. Using a mixture of lo-fi soundscapes with slightly more loud and anthemic hooks based on traditional alternative rock, he mixes the modern with the retro for a style of authentic and euphoric piece of indie rock music.
The self produced single is much more laidback and restrained than College Elite’s previous work. However, that doesn’t mean the project has done away with what made them unique. Layered guitars, contagious hooks, and conversational lyricism all form the foundation of the track. But is’ in the utilisation of a drum machine, sparkling soundscapes, and deeply evocative guitar solos that the project is breaking new ground through. More than anything, ‘Trouble’ falls right in the sweet spot of a niche in garage rock and shoegaze. It’s slightly wavy and dreamy, but defiantly raw and unfiltered.
