Singer-songwriter Todd Barrow is no stranger to experimenting with country music. In his new song “Good Luck”, he plays with the dexterity of a learned musician and connects to the audience with the familiarity of a well wisher. The sound is grounded in acoustic riffs, incorporating a sort of back and forth between each bar and his bluesy licks. Heres the thing though, while it embodies a casual tone, almost cynical in some places – it is still forward looking. Encouraging an approach of not taking things too seriously not for the sake of being cynical, but because c’est la vie. Thats just how life goes. It makes your realize just how small you are, just one among the crowd. Which might mean you’re not special, but more than that, it means you’re not alone in your dreams and despair. The song has a very brief soulful bridge that goes low and releases into the high notes of the chorus. It is clear that Barrow more than understands that dreams are universal, but in his reality-check, he goes a step further in reminding the listener that at the end of the day, there are endless possibilities. Hope is at the very heart of this song.
