‘Akira’ is definitively what you’d consider out there. The instrumental piece from US based Fang Su is an experimental smorgasbord of different sounds, but predominantly fixates on Su’s own unique production style with a heavy tinge of Japanese sounds around it. Completely recorded and produced on his own, with the drums and keyboards being the predominant instruments of choice on his work, Fang Su is a refreshing instrumental artist in an era where there is a lot of repetition and imitation. He’s paved his own lane, in his own way, and with his own style.
Fang Su’s wonderful weirdness can be identified in his influence as well. The instrumentalist cites Siouxsie Sioux, a new wave and gothic rock icon, as his largest influence. ‘Akira” is remarkably relaxing, maintaining a consistent and pleasant melody that glides along without ever hitting excessive highs or depressive lows. It’s folky, and relaxing. A great tune to unwind to.
