It’s not often you come across a classic rock tune that cites a modern hip-hop mainstream banger as an influence. And even though it may be indirect, anyone who claims a song as iconic as A$AP Ferg’s New Level as an influence is bound to leave me intrigued. And ‘Green Light’ does carry a lot of the similar energy. It’s a song to hype yourself up on, to take yourself to that next state, to elevate yourself to a point where you can break through the barriers and impositions holding you back.
‘Green Light’ is kind of dark, almost harbouring an air of mystery and shrouded darkness all over it. The vocals from Tom Golzen are subtle, but impactful. He utters the songs name in the chorus so deftly, so carefully, and almost hauntingly. That call and response hook became a sort of dogma in North Ship’s music.
It’s definitively alternative, choosing to carve out a lane of its own. A piece of innovative and imaginative alternative rock music that’s simple but creative.
