As someone who grew up and still cherishes the era of britpop with an almost unhealthy obsession, hearing a new piece that sounds straight out of that golden era was always going to be something I’d jump to hear. From the very first chord of Lapel’s ‘All Things Down to You’, you can’t help but think that you’re hearing a new age reincarnation of the Gallagher brothers right before your eyes. That distinctive Mancunian twang may be missing, but the swagger, progression, and arrangement is eerily reminiscent of Oasis in their heyday. Guitar driven rock and roll, raw vocals, and addictive choruses, it doesn’t get more similar than this.
One can’t help but draw a parallel between Lapels and artists like Greta Van Fleet. There’s an undeniable similarity that borders on flat out imitation. However, if you choose to view it as homage, as an inspiration from those who came before, then you can’t help but fall in love. It’s undoubtable that Lapels adores britpop. It’s also undoubtable that they’re simply damn good at crafting infectious tunes in the genre. Nostalgia and rock and roll have always gone hand in hand, and this group is bound to make it all that more excitable.
Gotta get a move on!
