The second single from ‘The Kindly Raven’s has a timeless quality embedded to it. The folk track, rife with an intermeshing of strings and a restrained jovial energy highlights unrequited love and the yearning for comfort even when a direct answer would be preferred. A ‘Bittersweet Lie’ here refers to that innate need to keep a relationship alive with an almost naïve sense of hope in a faltering relationship. There’s a sing-along vibe throughout the tune that makes it an exceptionally endearing campfire-esque tune to enjoy with friends.
Deep down however, the song ‘s really covering the cracks, much in the same way that we hold on to hope in situations where there isn’t much. But regardless, we still hold on to something for the fear of letting go. In that situation, even a lie, even when you know it’s a lie, can paper over a fountain of pain. Keeping it away for just a little bit longer is sometimes all we yearn for.
