Sydney based Mako Bron’s latest single ‘Sideways’ is a different kind of electro-pop. It’s not the hyper futuristic, intentionally over produced post-pop that tends to come from the genre. In a much more grounded fashion, Mako’s style is one that seeks to blend the organic with the synthetic. And for that, he’s actually more attuned to indie rock artists like The Killers, LCD Soundsystem, or even The Smiths.
After receiving a wealth of positive reviews and playlist attention for his debut EP Mirror Mirror, Mako returned with Sideways. The song represents a more impassioned, defter, and strongly indie vibe while characteristically retaining Mako Bron’s hybrid sound. And that’s what makes Mako so special — he’s an indie artist at heart, but he basks in the revel of electronic tunes. The song was written for a close friend of Mako’s who was dealing with one of the hardest personal tragedies imaginable — a family member enduring a severe mental illness.
His unique blend of traditional indie rock with modern electro pop is truly a soundscape in and of itself. As I mentioned earlier, there is some parity with a group like LCD Soundsystem, but Mako delivers his lyrics and melodies with a much more emotive flair. In a way, it’s almost nostalgic even, rekindling the same fire you’d get listening to a Springsteen piece. He’s truly, well worth your time.
