Diamonds is very much a song with multiple angles, sides, and faces. The experimental future bass record from Sydney based Kid Fiction is an absolute rollercoaster of an electronic tune. There’s an anxiety to this piece, a frenetic energy that prevails throughout that leaves you continually on edge, with an overbearing sense of concern that the beat never once lets go of you from. In stark contrast to the smooth and serenading vocal performance, the production is haywire, absolutely leaving you floored, anxious, and bewildered. But the vocals keep you grounded through the unstable take off and turbulence, giving the track its ideal complement from both aspects. The song is full of little references and tongue in cheek gems that Kid Fiction throws across. On one line for instance, he links Billie Holiday’s strange fruit to Francis Fukuyama’s thesis on the end of history.
The full EP At The End Of The Flat Earth is out on December 10th, and is the 3rd from the Sydney producer. He’s slowly been building his brand over three years, all the while performing at festivals and clubs to build a career that hosts a diverse body of music which reflects the times and the self.
