LÖNA – Deluxe | Lavish

Throughout ‘Deluxe’, the production that LÖNA brings out leaves you continually amazed. The twin sisters from Amsterdam have a distinct style of dark synth pop that’s slightly sinister in style and wholly lavish in scale. The identical twin sisters have played together in bands since childhood, but only really found their sound when they started LÖNA two years ago. Each song has an ethereal air to it, an atmosphere that has you floating in some sort of mystic darkness that enraptures you to the core.

The opening ‘Cold Case’, seems like a perfect deep trance tune for a late night at a club. The wavy synths, which jump all around your sound system take you on a sonic journey as the constant reverbing ‘you’re guilty’ continually echoes from wall to wall. On ‘If I Could Do It Again’, there’s a lot more vibrancy compared to the more hallowing darkness on its predecessor. This track feels jubilant, shimmering the synth work in a chorus that has you feeling on top of the world. It’s a powering track, one that has an inherent air of anthemic verve that drives it forward.

The album’s most definitive piece is ‘Girl’, a track that has three distinct versions. With a string version and a remix to go alongside the original, it’s clear that this single is the one the sisters hold in most regard. And for good reason too. ‘Girl’ takes all their talent and highlights it with meticulous detail. The trippy, almost whole bodied production leaves you overwhelmed in the original. The remix is pulsating, metallic, and altogether infectious for a club track, while the string section is a lot more morose and melancholic. For me, the remix is an absolute treat to the years.

A mesmerising synth pop record.
