Berlin-based singer-songwriter IRYS ushers into the German popular music scene a sense of neo-gothic reimagination to conventionally ‘dark’ songwriting, as she decorates her discography with the release of her latest 2021 single Ride or Die. IRYS returns to her discography no sooner than she had left it, with Ride or Die becoming her fifth consecutive single of the year, following some of her widely acclaimed tracks like Circles, Warriors and Strange Color.
The track opens up with almost metallic electric guitar bends that serve as the essential prerequisite to the thematic tempo — coupled with the near-nihilistic inclinations of IRYS’ songwriting. The vocal performance appears sultry and risque in a hedonistic ambience, complemented by the heavy bass-boosted trip-hop resemblances replete with techno-like synth waves and sloppily attractive percussive elements. Flirting with themes of lovelorn betrayal and vindictiveness, Ride or Die fits a mellowed and laid back acid house environment for the contemporary day, positing a sort of refurnished Amy Lee groove that is sure to bode well with long-time aficionados of the genre.
