‘Month End’ is an inescapably relatable piece of melodic indie rock from Minneapolis rockers Hyooman. Discussing the nagging deadlines and closures that come towards the end of the month, the songs meandering melancholy perfectly describes the dreariness of late capitalism that most of us find ourselves trapped in. ‘profit is everything’. It’s an indictment to the culture itself, the insistence on numbers and profits over wellbeing and fulfilment. But the songs tone is so overtly lackadaisical and slow that you’re drawn into the dreamy soundscape as a sort of escape from the hustle and bustle you can’t otherwise escape in your job.
The song is a caricature of a boss or authority figure who rather condescendingly and hilariously explains the lengths you have to go through to succeed. Overwork, abandon your core desires, and commit to the machine to place higher in its hierarchy.
An astute, dreamy, and lavishly produced piece of dream pop that perfectly encapsulates a life I dread.
