Matt Deangelis – World I’m Coming’ For You

‘World I’m Comin’ For You’ is an album that sounds wholly far removed from today in more ways than one. I don’t mean that in a bad way one bit either. The electric record from Matt Deangelis sounds like a classic rock record from the 70s and 80s, both in terms of its arrangement and Deangelis’ powerfully accentuated vocals. It’s masterfully produced, a keen attention to detail paid across every track on the relatively quick five piece album. The genre is in itself unique, but definitely pays a lot of respect and homage to the greats who came before. Enlisting the help of Liberty DeVitto and Richie Cannata, members of Billy Joel’s original band, Deangelis puts forth a sound from the past that’s seeped in nostalgia and emotion for the listeners of today.

From the very first few chords of ‘World I’m Comin’ For You’, you’re hurled into a stream of energy that has you immediately energised and excited. ‘So Fine’ is more reserved, a poignant ballad that’s loaded with love and emotion. ‘Mile Down The Road’ is a pitch perfect piece of classic rock, sectioned and broken down into phases and moments that start slow but build up to something more structured and grandiose as the song progresses. The brass work towards the end has it ascend to a new level. ‘Angel’ is the track that had me most immediately harkening back to the Billy Joel type artists, with a bit of Elton and Robbie thrown in.

I adore World I’m Comin’ For You for a slew of reasons. But most among them, it had me reliving the same emotions and unabashed expression that came out in the music I grew up on. It feels pure, it exudes energy that’s best expressed in a community. Classic rock certainly is eternal.
