A short but luscious five track EP. Cyan’s NOTE TO SELF is the right kind of modern indie pop album. The production is slightly raw and unfiltered, a bedroom pop environment that’s beautifully evoked by the Florida based emerging artist. Combining elements of neo-soul and r&b with dreamy pop music, Cyan’s style clearly has influences of modern pop artists like Tyler the Creator and Rex Orange County drawn across. On ‘WHERE U BEEN?’, you fall in love with the late night luscious production style that’s immersive yet slightly cluttered and imperfect in execution. It’s not polished by any means, but it’s certainly ambitious and vibrant. There’s a clarity in the style and an aesthetic that while slightly unfinished, is clearly creaking out from between the cracks.
‘NEW DAY’ is widely different, combining lo-fi production with a soulful r&b vocal performance that’s sensual and lackadaisical at once. What sets Cyan apart is his ability to stick to his style, keep it coherent and simple throughout his record. It’s clearly a reflection of his own experiences, a way for him to formulate his thoughts and put soundscapes to his feelings. “This EP served as a therapy session for me. It was able to guide me through my highest highs and lowest lows. I love beautiful
melodies mixed with hard drum pockets and this project is exactly that”.
NOTE TO SELF’s melodies are undoubtedly its strongest suit. They’re undoubtedly unique, and refreshingly smooth and adventurous. It’s wall to wall a short but sumptuous record that’s constantly hurling earworm after earworm at the listener. You never feel disengaged, continually enthused and relaxed as each new track offers more and more to you. Altogether, NOTE TO SELF is a landmark record from an indie pop artist who’s very much capable of breaking the wall into the mainstream.
