A short and sweet EP that distils the essence of Drunk Man Sober’s decidedly unique brand of alternative folk, Introducing… Drunk Man Sober is one of the most endearing and emotive pieces of modern folk that I’ve come across this year. Bringing a much more moody and downcast sound, the arrangement of their new EP perfectly encapsulates the tone of the lyrics alongside the story behind Max Flenley forming the band in the first place. It’s minimal at times, maximal at others, but continually never straying away from being open and vulnerable alongside delivering emotional and poignant tunes that are bound to turn a few heartstrings.
The pained singing of ‘I’m a drunk man sober’ on Hometown Sweetheart in my eyes perfectly represents the group in its fullest. The song has just a vocal performance and a simple acoustic backing but is still able to emanate so much feeling in each lyric. ‘Other Ideas’ is a bit more cheery, a more upbeat melody arrangement with lyrics that don’t feel as downcast. ‘Where Do I Turn?’ is definitely the group’s highlight. A sombre and poignant tune that somehow delivers swathes of emotions with minimal effort, it captures the alternative folk style and characteristic lyrical tonality of Drunk Man Sober in a bottle.
Since forming in only April 2021, Drunk Man Sober have been on three national tours, drummed up a dedicated following and played sold-out shows at the likes of Gloucester Guildhall and Stroud Sub Rooms. They’re a welcome force in the folk scene, bringing their stories and melodies to quite literally any audience who might delight in them.
