A casual, laidback, and relaxed piece of commercial pop/hip-hop, Lil Zib’s ‘On My Own’ follows a lackadaisical beat and seemingly effortless flow to come up with a suave and devil may care sounding break up song. It’s not terribly emotional, never once succumbing to a moment that requires some intense emotional discharge or catharsis. ‘On My Own’ relies on slick melodies, a mellow lo-fi beat, and an infectious chorus to just have you quirkily singing along to the notion of being better off by yourself.
But, by the song’s end, the constant to and fro that has you harkening between being alone and going back to this person has you taking that final choice to be with the person in the face of absolute struggle and adversity.
