Malmo based folk outfit Lasses Komet bring a bit of quirkiness, a bit of spunk, and a whole lot of character to their record ‘Inget var så pinsamt som vi hade hoppats’. Literally translating to ‘Nothing was as embarrassing as we had hoped’, it feels innately summery and loaded with warmth and joyous energy all around. A reunion of sorts, Lasses Komet released their debut album all the way back in 2005. Now, seventeen years since their short lived initial burst onto the scene, they’re back and more pointed than ever.
Truly, I wish I could say a lot more about the record but since the language itself escapes me, I’ll have to settle for commenting on the feeling of the arrangement, melody, and the harmonies. Every piece retains the same spirit, the same jingling acoustic melodies, delightfully expressive vocal back and forth, and a tonal style that just exudes positivity and warmth.
The song ‘Modiga dor bara en gung (Sam sa)’ opens the album with a rather supple acoustic blend of guitars alongside a harmonious vocal performance. As it moves into the rhythm section, you start to appreciate the accentuating beats. By the time the full ensemble starts playing, it really starts to make you feeling cheery inside.
From a purely tonal and melodic perspective, you won’t find a clearer section of earworms than what Lasses Komet have been able to craft here. Despite a seventeen year hiatus, it’s testament to this group’s ability to still maintain a harmony and ingenuity.
