Driven and built off a scintillatingly groovy bassline, Oli Morris’ ‘Flyer’ is acid jazz exemplified. The Bristol based saxophonist and composer has an ear for melodies that are slick and smooth. Tinged with feelings of nostalgia and comforting times, Flyer has you swooning and stank facing throughout the sheer subtleties in the composition. A refreshingly modern take, this instrumental is far from the lounge style while still retaining elements enough to make it an effortlessly easy listen.
Partially classical, and partially modern, Flyer is a mixed bag that’s well more than the sum of its parts. Morris’ ability to synthesize the two styles is what sets him apart. Taking the sleekness of traditional jazz and infusing with a bit more spunk and character through his own bass driven grooves makes for just the right amount of spark.
