de antiquis et novis is an expert at crafting exceptionally calming and yet deeply invigorating laidback electronic music. In ‘Afterglow’, the Munich based composer is at his best, weaving together layer upon layer of intricate musical walls together into a tapestry of sonic elements that take you to your most central place of bliss and calm. From the album’s opener, its titular piece, you’re immediately transported to your happy place, completely left at ease without a care in the world being able to penetrate the walls of transcendence that he’s able to construct for you. It feels warm, it feels cosy, but it also feels so lively and inspired.
Matthias Schorer is a musical whiz by all accounts. His meticulous ability to craft so many memorable moments across each track, and that too in songs that stand lengthy but consistently invigorating and entrancing is beyond impressive. Each song feels like a relaxant, a calming and settling effect that has you wholly immersed and able to let go of everything around you.
There’s a deeply cinematic feel to the entire record, with each song feeling larger than life and conveying so much through the individual soundscapes that you’re able to start imagining and picturing soundscapes much broader and larger than what’s immediately discernible. A magical if not ethereal journey unlike most.
