A luscious and spritely piece of synth driven pop, Jay Ives’ ‘Freak’ is one of the most uniquely produced and mixed pieces of electronic pop music I’ve heard all year. The beat feels retro but also strangely futuristic all at once, combining a kind of scratchy turn table feel with a lavishly opulent future soundscape. Ives’ own vocal performance on the chorus glides effortlessly over the entire arrangement, capturing the energy and vulnerability of opening up your true authentic self to another person. The entire production lends itself to that feeling of catharsis while still being deeply unsure of how to make it all happen.
Sumptuous synth pop with a spin that’s refreshingly differing.
