The debut EP from the newly formed indie rock outfit gloomy june, ‘Popsick’ is a delectable collection of modern indie tunes from a group that have an innate energy to seize the moment aand the day. Starting with ‘Save Anyone’, you’re hurled into something that sounds reminiscent of music from the early 00s but with an overarching production arrangement that feels exceptionally modern and retro all at once. Popsick is a delight for anyone who just adores catchy melodies and pop driven hooks while still differentiating the sound from anything too overly commercial or washed out.
The feeling on this record is incredibly varied, with the variety of tunes really going from a whole array of moods and expressions across each piece. The songs range from the anthemic “Save Anyone” to the retro pop “Always Gonna Let You Down,” and imagery such as biblically-accurate angels, a grim reaper dancing through an abandoned house party, and a performance inside a moving van. Front and centre of it all is a thesis about revelling while moping, about having a party and the best of times while you might just be having an awful one.
Indie rock for the soul that’s moody, gloomy, and a whole lot of fun within it all as well.
