I quite adore the rather quirky energy that floods the strange tempo and unusual flow of Evil Sweet’s ‘Queen Victoria’. The delightfully happy and cheery indie pop tune from this Northport based group just exudes a certain sense of warm nostalgia and heart that had me smiling from end to end on a dreary and rather depressing day. The song’s inspired and written from a very personal place, following the group’s frontman’s own chase after his childhood love who he grew up with on the north shore beaches of Long Island, and getting rejected throughout adolescence before reconnecting later in life. You can feel the realness in the emotion with the delivery of each line on the song. That juxtaposition of Victoria alongside euphoria just highlights the power and emotion behind the love being expressed.
Closing with a lovely acoustic melody and pattern towards the end just wraps the entire track in such a quaint and meaningful way. It’s an indisputably fresh sounding piece of indie rock, with a wholly unique approach to melody and songwriting that’s bound to delight any indie fan.
