With “When It Snows,” Sunflower Summit hopes to capture the magic and wonder of the winter season and share her own love and association with her listeners. From the soft, dreamy melodies, to the raw yet evocative acoustic string work, to the warming and heartfelt lyrics, this EP is sure to transport you to a cozy, snowy wonderland in your head. Opening with the effortlessly minimal and featherweight piece that is ‘Lightly’, Sunflower Summit’s beautiful vocal performance is the first thing you notice. The vocal harmonies are placed front and centre, a soft and gentle expressiveness that’s merely accentuated by a simple yet rousing acoustic melody that sets the mood for it all.
As you move onto ‘Look For Snow’, the topical element of the album starts to become clearer and more front facing. Here, there’s an even more stronger emphasis placed on the vocal melodies of Sunflower Summit. The way she poignantly delivers that chorus line has you feeling like you’re baked in blankets staring out your window and witnessing a mild and pleasing snowfall outside.
Sonically, the tracks on the album follow a fairly similar approach. Minimal acoustic melodies, poignant and powerful vocal harmonies, and lyrics that quite predictably delve into the magic and wonders of the winter season all play their part.
As the cold air wraps its icy fingers around us and the world is blanketed in a cloak of white, we are reminded of the quiet, still beauty of nature. The air is crisp and fresh, and the world seems to hold its breath as it waits for the snow to fall. The sound of crunching footsteps and the muffled silence of the world under a layer of snow fills me with a sense of peace and wonder. The winter landscape is a breathtaking sight to behold, and the promise of cozy nights by the fireplace with a warm mug of cocoa only adds to the allure of the season. There is an indescribable feeling of magic and possibility that comes with the first snowfall, and it stays with us throughout the entire winter season. Few projects have come close to describe this feeling the way Sunflower Summit manages on ‘When It Snows’.
