Melbourne based rocker Shayne Cook has a voice that’s nothing short of magnetic. On the charming and stirring “Miles Away”, he delivers a piece that’s anthemic without being too loud or over the top. There’s a simplicity to the arrangement that just adds additional layers of depth to the performance and style that Cook brings out. Combining a hook and melodic core that’s distinctively classic rock with an undercurrent of Americana, Cook evokes such a strong emotional message with crashing drums and rousing guitar work. But, like any of his songs, the real hook and sinker of Cook is that vocal performance.
There’s a heaviness to Cook’s voice, one that still feels reassuring and endearing. That final electric solo, smooth and lackadaisical towards the songs end is the perfect way to wrap up such a soothing and rousing piece all at once. Contemporary but old school all at once, “Miles Away” is rock and roll done right.
