Straight out of another dimension would be the only real way for me to place Gallowayyys latest record within any scope of categorisation. ANGELS WITH FANGS, PT. 1 defies convention like its the plague. The record is colourful, vibrant, filled with an assuredness in breaking from the norms in every which way it can. There’s such a playfulness to it all, but also a brooding undercurrent that perhaps adds to the beguile and mystique of each arrangement. It’s defiantly incisive, cutting through an oversaturated and perhaps over stimulated crowd to provide music that has intrigue to those who search for it.
Fluid and eclectic, from the moment DYE IT RED hits your headphones, you know that you’re here to expect something radical from Gallowayyys. This rapid infusion of hip-hop into a much more spaced out and almost hypnotic hyper pop undercurrent is nothing short of awe striking. DYE IT RED is as striking as an opener can be. It’s full-throttle, rich, luscious, but also comfortable in its own haze and cloudiness. As you flow into PINK LEMONADE, the pulsating and frenetic energy of the record hits new heights, almost flooding you with this furious rap verse on top of an electronic splutter of tiny sounds that just envelope you without reprieve. Finally, on the closer on “STICKY FINGERS” you really see the full range of talent that Gallowayyys brings to the table.
He’s such a decisively unique force, a fluid genre-defying artist who creates melodies out of what should just be unfiltered noise. ANGELS WITH FANGS, PT. 1 is far from an effortless listen. There’s definitely layers to it, moments where you could find pieces being a bit rough around the edges. But in its fulfilment, in experiencing the three tracks to completion, it’s hard not to be blown away by the sheer belief and imagination of these sonic odysseys.
