Wickedly wacky, HOLY B brings a magnetic fixation with the odd and wonderful on his latest collection Adventures in Lo-Fi – Vol. 3. The Berlin based beat maker crafts sounds that are wildly experimental in ethos and expression, evoking a sense of amazement and curiosity out of you that’s hard to miss. From the frenzied and tribal beat patterns of Voodoo Dance Track, you really are left equal parts bewildered and amazed by what kind of style is to come. It’s pulsating and patterned, a kind of unrelenting smashing sensation that just unfurls more and more onto you until you’re absolutely warped by its mesmerising percussive trance.
As it progresses into Whacky Weirdo, HOLY B starts to explore even more, incorporating a host of vocal samples to create this almost television like experience where you’re hearing what can only be initially described as some strange background noise before it catapults into the actual sped up interpolations to create the actual track. On “Dripping Taste of J”, he finally starts to take things down a notch, a rather hazy and almost soothingly sensual record that just has you basking in its energy. There’s a mellowness to this record, a placating sensation that just echoes relaxation despite its gritty industrial garb.
By no means is this record a traditional Lo-Fi piece whatsoever. It thrives on its extravagance, its constant choice to incorporate hard hitting percussive elements and the use of these staccato at times and pulsating at other beat interpolations. It’s hard-hitting from back to front, a thorough experiential listen of a record that leaves you intrigued by what one can create.
