Although many are quit to anoint it a lost art or a dying breed, there’s something that will forever have me in love with rock music that’s larger than life. Aaronson deliver an epic in every which way of the word on “The Great Swells That Carry Us Will Pull Us Under”. The titular track and lead single from their epic nine track album is a tour de force of experimental instrumental rock music that’s invigorating and immense in a way that few can match up to. It’s got structure, one that elucidates a feeling of story and narrative without the need for any words to give it that direction. I find myself so wholly drawn in and engaged with this piece and the album at large, an almost hypnotic pull and seizure that keeps you intoxicated and gripped from back to front.
This is what rock music can be and deserves to be. It has scale, it has substance, it has emotion, and it’s all done with just the weaving together of the core live instruments that give it that absolute power and resonance for any listener. The piercing of the electric guitar, the driving build of the drums, and the harmonies between the strings just craft this intricate ensemble that’s bewitchingly beautiful in so many ways.
A true operatic ride that’s bound to sweep you off your feet.
