Bringing together yet another ensemble of tracks that traverse the line between the real and ethereal, JSDavani’s lusciously pieced together record “Sam Y Nona” is an almost underwater kaleidoscope of experimental soundscapes meant to soothe the soul. There are moments that disorienting, almost disconcerting even throughout the record. But it’s in these moments of confusion, of unease, and of complete amazement that the record really unravels itself to the listener. Opening with the strange vocals on Coumarou, you’re immediately left to your own devices on this hazy and arresting soundscape.
Other almost wonderland-esque moments come to resplendent life on tracks like “intendanending” and the soothing beauty of a ballad-esque composition on the closer “the optimist”. On the latter, despite its inherent darkness and melancholic soundscape, there’s something innately wistful and hopeful about its inner expression that feels liberating.
While some pieces like “opportunityisnowhere” might stretch beyond the imagination and patience of an average listener, there is so much to appreciate in the relatively shorter tunes that are packed with sonic elements for anyone to wholly immerse themselves in.
