Sleep On It feels like a record that speaks to my inner teenager in a way that most modern rock fails to do so. The larger than life arrangements, the angst filled vocal performances, and the darkness embedded within each composition is so intrinsically emo but also imbued with a sense of unfettered rage and aggression that comes through its more metal influences. The shattering electric guitar, exemplified in solos on songs like “Soaring” makes for even the more casual rock fans to delight in. Songs like “You’re Welcome” have me feeling all kinds of nostalgic, perfectly capturing that alternative and emo rock energy of the late 00s, but with a pounding heavy metal influence that adds an additional layer of depth. Harmonies throughout the record are exemplary, filled with moments of chanting that you can already imagine yourself belting at the top of your lungs at a stadium show.
This is a rock band, one that clearly revels in the fullness of rock and roll and the performance of it all. There’s passion embedded in each aspect of the arrangement, you can palpably hear the visceral expression that each member is bringing to the table.
