Immediately going through Alex Wellker’s pop rock expedition on Fly Away, I’m treated to a style that threw me back to one of my favourite songwriters, Noel Gallagher. I don’t know if its the intonation in his voice or the cadence, or the nature of the topics he sings about, there’s something that draws me to it.
From the opening acoustic of You Want Us to the more gritty and vocal processing of “We Celebrate”, Wellkers truly has you flying away with his diverse and roaring instrumentals and equally gripping songwriting. The two French songs interspersed right in the middle are a delightful dollop of french pop rock but alas I couldn’t tell you what they mean as its not my native language.
It’s on song ten, “Amy”, that Wellkers hits you the hardest. The string arrangement here is so innately loaded with emotional depth and scope that it glides and elevates you to new heights. It’s flooring, especially when the electric solo comes in. A true grand rock ballad that cements Fly Away as a record well worth your time and energy.
