Combining core tenets from a multitude of genres, Allie Jean’s core focus in my eyes finds itself anchored and rooted in the ethos of country music but with a guise and tinge of indie pop to give it a bit of distinctiveness. On “Pretty On The Outside”, the Melbourne based singer-songwriter takes you down a journey around the fact that sometimes we all make bad decisions based on superficial reasons that sometimes come back to bite us. It’s poignant, heartfelt, and loaded with a vocal performance that’s sweeping and swooning all at once. The scale of the chorus, loud, pounding, and intensely anthemic is a sensationally impactful and imposing force on an otherwise subtle and soothing performance. A truly rousing piece.
