I’ve been a die hard fan of Jakarta based independent art rockers Alpha Mortal Foxtrot for a while now. Ever since I heard that epic single ‘No One Will Talk About Us’, I was simply blown away by the sheer scale, talent, and melody behind a tune that managed to waver between heavy and moody all at once. Now, resurfacing with an equally impressive composition on ‘Spectrum’, the band opts for a much deeper tenderness and emotional core amidst their signature heavy sound. The song was inspired Wiku’s intense desire to communicate with his son, Anantara, who is autistic. Today, with his son being able to communicate, Wiku’s own passion for music has been reiginted.
The story might be enough of a reason to perk your ears and pique your interest to hear more, but ‘Spectrum’ is just a sublime piece of alternative rock in every which way. Deeply emotive and evocative vocals underly powerful and epic guitar riffs and pounding drums. It’s not often you get to appreciate the almost overwhelming amount of rock talent coming out of Asia and Alpha Mortal Foxtrot rank right at the top of that list for me.
