Tel aviv based dream pop trio Angelic Circus have been crafting sensuous, supple, and transportive melodies for over three years now. ‘Open to the Future’, is the final part of a four part release cycle. In it, the group narrates and crafts an entire soundscape of a story of a woman who progressively changes and adopts different outlooks with each passing record.
In the first EP ‘Stepping out of culture’, the woman decided to no longer consume the culture she finds toxic for her. In the second EP ‘Threading the unknown’ she started forming her new life in a different, more natural, inner space; and in the 3rd EP ‘With Honest Intent’, she developed and strengthened her spiritual life.
On this final project of the series, ‘Open to the Future’, the protagonist is turning increasingly sensitive to the whispers of the future, allowing herself to ascend to an almost higher purpose. You can feel it keenly on this record, it has a transcendental feeling to it; sounding entirely like a spiritual record in parts. It uses sounds that feel straight out of a meditation soundscape, lulling you to close your eyes and experience the music taking complete control of your headspace.
The first track, ‘Quiet’, is remiss of any vocals. It starts the album on a fantastically dreamy note, just letting you ascend, almost levitate with the pitter patter of its beat. ‘Hope of the Future’ has Galit take centre stage with an inspiring vocal performance. Eran Peres’ bassline in the background adds a whole other dimension to the track. But it’s on the final track, ‘Whispers’, that Angelic Circus truly wrap the album with a finality and style that is uniquely theirs. While most dream pop often forgoes the power of a bassline, Angelic Circus are so well versed in how to make it a centrepiece in their music. The closing moment of ‘Whispers’, wherein the vocal performance actually breaks down into whispers is such a beautiful outro to an absolutely ethereal album.
Dream pop enthusiasts will adore ‘Open to the Future’, it’s got the style, emotion, and soundscapes that are absolutely essential to the genre. Check out this Tel Aviv trio right now!
