Bad Mother Nature – Hawks, Doves and Gamblers

Dastardly, raucous, but altogether smoothly melodic, Bad Mother Nature’s signature gritty alternative rock energy is consistently tight and riveting to any fan of the genre. They don’t veer into anything too experimental or outlandish, choosing instead to play by the numbers but hitting those numbers with precise and immaculate precision. The sheen of americana, of country, and of that heartland rock methodology is a definitive influence on Bad Mother Nature’s sound.

On Hawks, Doves and Gamblers, the group hit new highs. Six years into their journey, this Sacramento outfit bring to life a piece that’s inspired by their drummer Jon McCann’s service in Afghanistan in 2013, as well as the recent war in Ukraine. Wryly decrying the ridiculous gambling of life and loss in war, it’s an incisive attack on the establishment but without a backing rage or aggression. Instead, in its rather melodic nonchalance, the more lackadaisical critique somehow hits even further given the satirical nature of the critique itself.

A punchy and steering riff, a chorus that’s inherently and easily addictive, and a message that’s purposeful, this is a statement of a rock song without a doubt.
