Influenced by equal parts The Beach Boys and The Addams Family, Black Mail House have a distinctively warm yet strangely dark style of alternative rock that sets them apart. The quintent from Los Angeles have recorded their latest record with the help of twenty or so additional musicians alongside. Using grim and rather bleak lyrical themes alongside a melody and arrangement that feels more innately anthemic and euphoric, ‘Since You Let Me Down’ is a flamboyant piece of alternative rock that feels strangely sombre and summery at the same time.
Singing ‘When there’s no one there to see you’ with a seemingly oxymoronic positivity and glee, ‘Since You Let Me Down’ somehow combines the darkness with the light. It’s sunshine pop imbued with moroseness, not too maudlin yet not too resplendent and radiant.
