Black Suit Devil’s latest album, “The Eternal Sleep,” is a profound reflection of the turbulent times during which it was conceived. Written in 2020 amid global lockdowns, Andy Du Rego delves into themes of AI, politics, and personal introspection, resulting in an album that is both dark and heavy in nature.
“The Eternal Sleep” features eight meticulously crafted tracks that mark a bold expansion into new musical territories. Du Rego revisits his roots as a hard rock, grunge, and punk electric guitarist, showcasing his versatile vocal range and diverse guitar skills. Joined by John Brand on bass and Vic Freitas on drums and percussion, the album also includes guest performances from Robyn White of Toronto rock band “Byrdy” and Ryan Funk on pedal steel guitar.
Lyrically, the album addresses themes of isolation, mental health, depression, racial conflict, and rising suicide rates. Yet, amidst the darkness, there is a message of hope and self-betterment, encapsulated in the track “New Day Sun.” Du Rego’s tribute to the music industry and his fans is poignantly expressed in the punk anthem “Shut The Punk Up,” rounding off an album that is both a candid snapshot of a challenging time and a testament to resilience and new beginnings.
It’s a rollercoaster record, one that exemplifies the power, pomp, and pressure of a hard rock album in all its glory. A landmark record for Black Suit Devil, this is hard rock done right.
