A short four track collaborative EP from an italian-born Melbourne-based DJ, music producer and sound engineer (Leo Guardo) a musician and composer (Adam from Cali Satellites) and Australian composer and a singer Brontë Horder, ‘Only The Good Ones’ is a masterfully composed and arranged piece of modern pop music. Each of the four tracks has direction and style, a perfectly synthesized piece of addictive indie pop music. There’s a bit of dance, with production environments that feel spacious and luscious at once. The beats are pulsating at times, other times being much more meditative. Rarely do you feel that you’re disinterested or in a lull with each track bringing something decidedly unique and striking.
The titular track is a pitch perfect modern dance pop song, with a melody slightly reminiscent of Charli XCX’s ‘Good Ones’ purely from the lyricism. But here, the production is nowhere near as metallic or energised as it is there. It’s light, delicate, and majestic through Bronte’s magical vocal performance. But the production is a powerful highlight, evoking an ethereal and transcendental energy that makes you feel elevated and star struck. On ‘Before We Say Goodbye, the more dance like energy is replaced with a more pulsating electronic beat that builds with a focused precision. It’s pulsating in its progression, moving forward with a continuity and direction that grabs you at the seams. The slight electric guitar hooks and strings thrown and mixed in add a new dimension.
Each of the track’s has so much to pick apart from. If for nothing else, just the pleasure of re-listening to each piece again and again to decipher the nuances of the arrangement is a magical experience in itself. The power of collaboration can’t be understated enough and this trio have their synergy on lock. A truly meticulously pieced together EP that transcends traditional pop and creates something wholly new.
