Futuristic, but also strangely nostalgic, Cartier Grim’s ‘Made in Heaven’ is hyper pop infused with hip-hop into a post modern robot esque melodic splash. The video game sounding piece of autotune driven electronic pop feels immediately disconcerting and awkward but also so strangely endearing that you can’t help but hit the replay button. It’s not an obvious route for the up and coming artist, opting to make something so offbeat and what could easily be interpreted as annoying or strange.
But ‘Made in Heaven’ feels like a needed transition, the kind of pop music that’s slowly growing in popularity with artists like Charli XCX and 100 gecs making waves through similar production styles. Cartier Grim’s hip-hop spin to the effect and swagger is a welcome addition, the kind of futuristic and robotic sheen that makes for a tune that’s ever so exciting while being a slight bit disconcerting.
