CATALYSTS- Sylvia | Rock All Over The Place

Fusing together three bands on the South Wales music scene; (Kennedy Soundtrack, Panz Agenda, Under Crimson Skies) CATALYSTS self-released their first 2 singles late last year. ‘Sylvia’, their second release with Dharma records, highlights the musical eclecticism that the group brings to life. If I had to catalogue to one sound, it definitely plays like a metal track — a melodic one to be clear. But, the song somehow opens with a nigh electric sounding synth introduction before a crashing ensemble of more traditional metal instrumentation overwhelms you.

‘Sylvia’ is a scream at the top of your lungs song that must be defined as anthemic. Unsurprisingly, the Welsh group’s debut album scheduled for later this year is also called ‘Anthemic’. On the song, the group say “‘Sylvia represents those toxic relationships, good when you’re partying. But just like the hangover comedown the next morning, not so good for functioning in the real world.” In a way then, Sylvia is an ode and caution call to escapism. It starts from the top, perfectly echoing the elation and euphoria that you thrive on in the highs of a toxic relationship before delving into the more sedative and cautionary closure to illustrate the horrific lows.

I’ve never been big on metal, but when it’s done with a fixation on melody — especially with such exquisitely composed vocal harmonies, I can’t help but fall in love with it. ‘Sylvia’ is thoroughly unique, a metal song that stands out for its energy, its content, and its experimentation. This Welsh supergroup deserve your love. Check them out now!
