Combining a classic rock swagger and bravado with a much more distinctively modern arrangement, “Women” sees experimental art-rock collective “Cautionary Tales” deliver a fresh piece that’s delightfully their own. There’s a performative character associated with Cautionary Tales vocal performance, a clear stage appropriate style and suaveness that gives the entire song its weight and credibility. The lyrics are consistently interesting, “I’m a wasp to a spider” being but one metaphor in a flurry of punchy lines that are delivered with an ominousness and stature that’s infectious and powerful.
“Women” reminds me of a Jethro Tull esque song in many ways, with its narrative, it’s over the top and historical lyrics that reference Joan of Arc amongst others, and the larger arrangement that’s so rich with live instrumentation.
For anyone who’s a fan of rather darkly comic storytelling and progressive rock that thrives on these narrative structures and grandiose arrangements, this is an electrifying tune.
