If I had to boil down Chargr’s latest single in one word — exuberant would be my choice. The joyous indie pop tune doesn’t seem to have a care in the word, filled with groovy and funky beat choices and glistening guitar work. Even the album art, which features the artist revelling in dance with a bin on his head speaks to this theme. ‘This is just junk.’ Of course, the actual record is far from what the conventional definition of the term might lend you to believe. It’s excitingly fun, infectiously addictive, and enthusiastic to a fault. Hidden beneath this cheery and playful exterior, lies a more deep seated frustration. It’s not dark per se, but far from light hearted.
Junk is all about the realisation that life’s not moving forward, that you’re stuck in place but you’re yearning for something more. It founds itself on that frustration, and then, in a moment of complete and utter catharsis, it leans into the notion that you can just dance your troubles away. A moment of hilarity in the conception of this song comes from the video itself. Charlie Wood, the man behind Chargr, paid someone on Fiverr to dance as a cheerleader and
hung up a green screen in his living room to fill in the blanks with his excellent dance moves.
Junk has recently also received track of the week on BBC Introducing Northamptonshire. It’s bound to have you having fun, so check it out right now!
