A hypnotic piece of hip-hop, written as an ode to an afterparty, ‘Take It There’ is a luscious piece of late night rap music that will have you relishing your time at the club. The lo-fi beat, staccato flow, and decadent lyricism is just the right kind of mellow but infectious to have you vibing out. The beats, sensual and sumptuous, are the perfect complement to that time of the night when the entire venue seems to be dead and reeling from the hit of the final few drinks. It’s the background energy you yearn to hear at the pitch black of the party, the final moments when only the real troopers are left standing.
‘Death By Tapioca’, or Alborz Mohtashami, grew up in Canada with Iranian immigrants. That cultural confluence, both imbibing elements from the West and the East, formed a significant part of his upbringing and sound today. Song-writing has been his outlet for a while now, consistently using it to grapple with the socio-political situation he finds himself in. The vilification he faced in a post 9/11 word in particularly impacted him. But his alter ego, ‘Death by Tapioca’ is not about that life whatsoever.
Taking care of himself, joining a poetry circle, and returning to school all helped him find himself, this time as a more jovial and light spirited artist. A unique voice in a cluttered pool, he’s carving his own niche bit by bit.
