hangtime – Walls

I think what struck me the most when listening to hangtime’s three track EP ‘Walls’ was the sheer audacity to even put together these kind of sonic elements into a sum of the parts that Walls represents. Quite unequivocally, it’s unlike any other record I’ve ever heard. The strange, heavy, overbearing sound combines elements of metal, electronic music, industrial sounds, and even alternative rock all in one palatial short collection that’s down right stupefying in scale and substance. The titular track is a definitive highlight for me, as the ‘I hate it when it gets like this’ starts repeating, you start to let go of apprehensions and fully commit to experience the totality and falling into the immersion of this downright masterful and majestic record that sounds straight out of the future.

It’s quite progressive in nature to, with each song having different parts to it that combine together into a larger piece. hangtime never feel the need to rush an idea out, they spend a good five minutes on each track truly fleshing out the totality of each piece in whichever way they’ve dreamt it to be. A track like NFZ feels almost nightmarish at times, an undeniably overwhelming assault on the senses that’s pulsating and relentless but the right kind of heavy aggression to fuel your own inner self.

One of the most remarkably differentiated and experimental pieces of industrial futuristic music I’ve had the pleasure to come across. I can’t even draw parallels here, because there simply are none to be equivocated to. For those not of faint heart, you’re bound to love this.
