Icarus Phoenix take you down one of the most dreamy and intoxicating assortment of songs on the aptly titled and intensely performed “I Should Have Known The Things You Never Said”. The powerful indie folk outfit from Baltimore is scintillatingly special. Opening with the almost self-titled “The Things You Never Told Me”, it’s in the lyricism that’s so pointed and personal that you get wrapped in. There’s such a clear sheen to this entire record, a wonderfully polished approach to the songwriting that still gives way to moments of rawness that elevate the experience to another level. Good intentions, they won’t suffice is such a powerful line that hit me like a truck the moment I heard it.
This is a record where after every listen I found myself hitting add to my playlist for each subsequent song. It’s a masterfully pieced together piece of indie rock music, completely rife with moments of emotional distress, euphoric highs, and a sense of breakthrough that’s truly inspiring. Songs like High Tide are intensely personal, but still find you drawn to the power of the words behind it.
An indie rock special one.
